“Popular Science Unveils Top Innovations of 2023, Showcasing the Pinnacle of Human Ingenuity.”

Today, Popular Science proudly revealed the winners of its annual Best of What’s New Awards, a prestigious recognition highlighting the most innovative products and technologies across various categories. After thorough evaluation of thousands of entries, the editors selected five honorees per category, along with an overall “Innovation of the Year” from the 10 categories, ranging from Aerospace to Sports & Outdoors. This marks the 36th year of this celebrated list, showcasing groundbreaking features designed to significantly enhance our lives.

Annie Colbert, Popular Science’s Editor-in-Chief, expressed pride in celebrating innovations that have been transforming our world since 1988. The Best of What’s New Awards aim to showcase radical ideas that positively impact our everyday lives and futures, spanning disease treatments, space exploration progress, auto industry electrification, and forward-thinking gadgets.

This year’s awardees cater to diverse interests, featuring products for gamers like Sony’s PS5 Access Controller and Logitech’s PRO X2 LIGHTSPEED Gaming Headset, coffee enthusiasts with De’Longhi’s Eletta Explore espresso machine, outdoor lovers through Polartec’s Fresh Face Odor Control, and astronomy enthusiasts with Unistellar’s Deep Dark technology. The list also includes products contributing to collective knowledge advancement, such as the European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) and Skydio’s Short Range Reconnaissance System. Additionally, health-focused innovations like Pfizer’s Abrysvo vaccine for RSV treatment and Eisai’s LEQEMBI treatment for early Alzheimer’s were acknowledged. The coveted “Innovation of the Year” title was awarded to Perrigo for developing the first over-the-counter birth control pill in the US since the FDA’s approval in 1960.

  • Health: Opill by Perrigo* (Innovation of the Year)
  • Home: Portable solid-state battery power stations by Yoshino
  • Personal Care: Visible Plus by Visible Health
  • Sports & Outdoors: Eagle Transmission by SRAM

Additional winners encompass a range of products, from Polaris’ RANGER XP Kinetic to Meta’s Quest 3 headset, Eufy’s Mach V1 Ultra stick vacuum, Volvo EX30, Therabody’s Theragun PRO Plus, Charles River Analytics’ Awarion system, ToughBuilt’s ShockStop hammer, Violette_FR’s Invisible Bandage, The New RevAir, and Kia’s EV9.
